HCHO measurements during CHABLIS in coastal Antarctica

چکیده
Gas phase formaldehyde concentrations were measured during the 2004-5 CHABLIS campaign at Halley research station, Antarctica. Data coverage span from March 2004 through to January 2005 thus capturing the majority of the year. Factors controlling HCHO concentration include local chemical sources and sinks, and exchange with the 5 snow surface. The measured seasonality is in line with previous observations from Neumayer station, with maximum in summer and minimum during the winter months, but with lower absolute concentrations throughout the year. Steady state calculations show oxidation of methane to be the overwhelming source of formaldehyde during the summer, with destruction dominated by photolysis and reaction with Br atoms.

The multi-seasonal NOy budget in coastal Antarctica and its link with surface snow and ice core nitrate: results from the CHABLIS campaign
Measurements of a suite of individual NOy components were carried out at Halley station in coastal Antarctica as part of the CHABLIS campaign (Chemistry of the Antarctic Boundary Layer and the Interface with Snow). Conincident measurements cover over half a year, from austral winter 2004 through to austral summer 2005. Results show clear dominance of organic NOy compounds (PAN and MeONO2) durin...

CHABLIS (Chemistry of the Antarctic Boundary Layer and the Interface with Snow) was a collaborative UK research project aimed at probing the detailed chemistry of the Antarctic boundary layer and the exchange of trace gases at the snow surface. The centre-piece to CHABLIS was the measurement campaign, conducted at the British Antarctic Survey station, Halley, in coastal Antarctica, from January...
متن کاملVariability of formaldehyde in the Antarctic troposphere
The annual cycle of formaldehyde (HCHO) was measured at a remote site in Antarctica in order to investigate seasonal and diurnal variations as well as chemical processes in the troposphere. The measurements were performed in 1997 (March 1997 to January 1998) and in February 1999 at the German Antarctic research station Neumayer, which is located at 70¡37@S, 8¡22@W. The obtained time series for ...
متن کاملFormaldehyde determination in seawater. Preliminary application to coastal samples at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica).
A sensitive spectrofluorimetric-FIA (flow injection analysis) method for formaldehyde (HCHO) determination was improved with the aim of analysing seawater samples. The fluorescence emission versus HCHO concentration shows a linear pattern from sub microg L(-1) to about 1000 microg L(-1). The reproducibility at 15 ppb level is about 2%. Interferences from other aldehydes were checked; only glyox...
متن کاملThe effect of UV-radiation on photo-oxidants and formaldehyde in the atmosphere
The annual cycle of formaldehyde (HCHO) has been investigated at a remote surface-site in Antarctica. HCHO mixing-ratios during the period of stratospheric ozone depletion are significantly higher than during times of similar sunshine duration in austral autumn. This might be due to enhanced UV-B radiation.
